NFL Hands Minnesota Vikings Running Back Cam Akers Questionable Fine – Week 10
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers tore his Achilles tendon last Sunday, effectively ending his 2023 campaign. To add insult to injury, the NFL has slapped the rusher with a $8,065 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct in his team’s 31-28 win in Week 9.

Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL hit Akers with a fine for pointing at Falcons DL Kentavius Street after the former took down the latter on a Josh Dobbs run down the sideline late in the second quarter.

Cam Akers: Just the Latest Player Hit with a Questionable Fine

The NFL and Roger Goodell continue to hand out fines this season at an unprecedented pace. Former Houston Texans superstar J.J. Watt has voiced his frustration with the league, taking to social media to back the players receiving fines. Watt said the NFL is “stealing money” in his latest attack on the league’s handling of discipline.

The future Hall of Famer’s tweet comes attached to a video of Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs attempting to run over a second-level defender near the goal line of his team’s game last Sunday. The NFL fined Jacobs $21,855 for unnecessary roughness. Watt is not the only highly profiled NFL personality questioning the league, with multiple former players and current analysts taking to social media to defend the players receiving controversial penalties. Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen also got fined for pointing at a defender during his touchdown run on Sunday Night Football in Week 9, with Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce calling it “ridiculous.”

Minnesota Vikings: Cam Akers Done for the Season

Cam Akers will miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles. The 24-year-old joined the Vikings after playing one game with the Los Angeles Rams to start the season. Akers ran 38 times for 138 yards and one score in six games while donning the purple and gold. A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Akers won a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021.
