Less than 48 hours after their heartbreaking 33–30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round, the Buffalo Bills have already begun making changes.
Those changes have started with the head coach, as owner Terry Pegula revealed on Monday that the team has relieved Sean McDermott of his duties after nine seasons with the organization.
In the same statement, Pegula also announced that Brandon Beane has been promoted to President of Football Operations, in addition to his current role as general manager.
McDermott led the Bills to eight playoff appearances in his nine years at the helm, compiling a 98–50 overall regular-season record to go with five AFC East titles. That success, however, didn’t translate to when it mattered most, as he couldn’t get his team—led by superstar quarterback Josh Allen—over the hump, failing to even reach a Super Bowl.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter has reported that McDermott could land a new head coaching gig elsewhere this offseason, noting that the veteran has already informed his staff that he intends to continue coaching. Baltimore, Tennessee, Las Vegas, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Arizona, and Miami all still have vacancies.
With the Bills now searching for a new head coach, attention shifts to who could take over what is easily now the most desirable opening in football.
In the wake of McDermott’s firing, NFL insider Peter Schrager has pointed to Brian Daboll, former Bills offensive coordinator; Joe Brady, current Bills offensive coordinator; and Davis Webb, former quarterback and Allen’s former teammate, as potential candidates for the role.
The search certainly won’t stop there, as Beane is faced with the critical task of finding the right leader to maximize the remaining years of Allen’s prime and bring the Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo for the first time in franchise history.
