It's been several years since Jon Gruden was ousted as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, but NFL owners finally seem to be softening on the idea of letting him return. But does Gruden even have a path to return to the NFL?
One insider seems to think so.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport discussed Gruden's past, present and future in an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show. Rapoport said that while Gruden might have some legal hoops to jump through, a team truly interested in hiring him would have no problem solving the issues.
That said, he has not yet heard of teams interested in hiring Gruden as a head coach. He has, however, heard of some teams interested in him as a coordinator.
“There’s still some legal issues that need to be worked through,” Rapoport said. “Now, if somebody wants to hire him, my sense is if there would be things where everybody could get together on the legal side and figure it out and either compromise or settle it, handle it, whatever, perhaps. I’m sure there’s some interest. I haven’t heard any team particularly trying to hire him as a head coach. I did know there were some teams that thought about hiring him as a coordinator, which, would be hard to have a better hire than that as a coordinator.
“I would say, to me – as someone who likes football content, as much as football – I kind of like him where he is, to be honest. That’s just, like, selfish. He’s in a great spot. I think his stuff is really good. But I wouldn’t rule it out. I really wouldn’t.”

On top of being a Super Bowl winning head coach and one of the few champions that are actively looking for work, Gruden has a reputation for being a "QB whisperer" - someone who can get the absolute best out of almost any quarterback.
While his 117-112 overall record as a head coach may not seem impressive, he coached the likes of Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson, Brian Griese, Jeff Garcia and Derek Carr to some of the best years of their NFL careers.
With the way that the NFL leans so overwhelmingly towards quarterback dominance, a coach at any role who can get that level of production from one is basically a must-have.
In 2021, Gruden was forced to leave the Raiders after a series of leaked messages between himself and another NFL executive became public. Those messages contained a slew of horrible comments with language that was unacceptable in the league.
As a result, Gruden has mostly spent the last few years doing various media projects and occasionally serving as a consultant for other teams. He currently has his own show with Barstool Sports and if he doesn't get another coaching job in the near future, he might have a permanent job on his hands.
Will we ever see Gruden back on the NFL sidelines?
