The Minnesota Vikings have been mentioned as a possible suitor for Aaron Rodgers in free agency. If they truly want him, though, they'll have to beat out the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Giants and Steelers have expressed serious interest in Rodgers. An argument can be made that both franchises are a bit desperate in their pursuit of a proven quarterback. It's unclear how much they're willing to pay for the four-time MVP.
It wasn't until Friday when Dianna Russini of The Athletic mentioned Minnesota as a landing spot for Rodgers.
"The Vikings are having discussions about what they want to do at quarterback and if they want Rodgers," Russini said. "Rodgers is giving them time and waiting to hear from Minnesota. The Vikings have yet to make a decision."
CBS Sports insider Jonathan Jones added some intel on Minnesota's interest in Rodgers.
Jones spoke to people who believe Rodgers would've already signed with the Vikings if a deal was on the table. That doesn't mean we should completely cross them off his list of suitors, but a marriage between the two sides seems unlikely right now.
"Folks I've talked to believe if the Vikings wanted Rodgers, he would already be a Minnesota Viking," Jones said. "They clearly have the best roster out of the three teams [linked to Rodgers]. He would have a solid opportunity to start. It would be a short-term proposition with JJ McCarthy being their quarterback of the future."
The Vikings went 14-3 this past season with Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback. We'd have to imagine that Rodgers would be successful in Minnesota.
At the end of the day, though, Rodgers comes with a lot of baggage. If the Vikings don't want to deal with his frequent appearances on "The Pat McAfee Show" and his unwillingness to attend voluntary workouts, they may look elsewhere for a veteran quarterback.
