The Washington Commanders seem content with their running backs as things stand. That won't prevent general manager Adam Peters from tweaking the options available if he decides more is needed.
Fans were clamoring for a high-profile arrival to the backfield unit this offseason. Peters held a different opinion, keeping faith with those who made the squad last season and spending a seventh-round selection on the intriguing Jacory Croskey-Merritt instead.
That's a supreme vote of confidence in players like Brian Robinson Jr., Austin Ekeler, and Jeremy McNichols. Chris Rodriguez Jr. also got a new deal, but his chances of making the squad are slim unless the former Kentucky star takes a monumental leap forward.
It's a fluid situation that could change at any moment if Peters sees fit. And one leading NFL insider believes the Commanders could be a potential landing spot for one of the biggest names remaining on the running back market.
Jeremy Fowler from ESPN named the Commanders as a team that makes sense for Nick Chubb. The veteran, who's highly productive but dealt with some serious injury problems in recent years, is looking for another opportunity somewhere. Even so, the insider acknowledged that he might have to wait until training camp to find a new home.
I know he [Nick Chubb] expects to play. The running back market is tough. A lot of these guys are waiting, I think probably up until training camp at this point. I do not expect Chubb back with the Browns barring some sort of surprise or injury. There are some teams out there that could be in the market for one. You know, the Commanders or the Bears come to mind. They could be looking for an extra back at some point. Right now he's in that mode where you just survey the landscape, see what develops, and keep working out to play next year.Jeremy Fowler

This would be a bold move. Chubb was among the league's best once upon a time, and he looks in tremendous shape based on his ongoing social media videos to keep his name in the limelight. But after featuring just 10 times over the last two seasons, the injury red flags are obvious.
Much will depend on what sort of contract Chubb is seeking. It won't be anything like the top dollar he received on a contract extension with the Cleveland Browns. That means there could be value in the pickup if he gets a clearer run of luck on the health front.
Chubb would probably jump at the chance to impact a contending team after wallowing in mediocrity or worse with the Browns throughout his career. But the interest needs to be mutual.
