NFL insider raises red flags over Terry McLaurin’s mysterious absence

Veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders were widely expected to reach an agreement on another long-term commitment with minimal fuss. But with nothing imminent, the wide receiver could have taken matters into his own hands.

McLaurin has one year remaining on his deal. The second-team All-Pro is an integral part of the Commanders' plans for progress. He's a high-level performer on the field and an exceptional leader in the locker room. The former Ohio State standout is revered by fans and teammates alike. He's also been extremely loyal to the cause when others jumped ship at the first opportunity.

That's the sort of player Washington should keep at all costs. General manager Adam Peters stated earlier this offseason that the plan is to give McLaurin another deal. There was no definitive timeline attached, but speculation is emerging about the third-round pick potentially raising the stakes.

Terry McLaurin mysteriously absent from practice amid Commanders' contract stalemate

According to Jordan Schultz from FOX Sports, McLaurin was not on the field for Tuesday's workout. The insider stated he'd been a full participant previously, so it's something he'll be monitoring closely with Phase 3 of OTAs beginning in just a few short days.

This could have been for anything. McLaurin could have been excused for a reason other than his contract situation. He could be working out the intricate details of the deal before signing on the dotted line. He could be sitting out until something gets rubber-stamped. There's just no telling for sure.

McLaurin is the ultimate professional. It would be surprising if he held out, but it couldn't be completely dismissed if there is no movement on the contract front.

Peters is professional enough to avoid any unnecessary complications. He knows how pivotal McLaurin is. He'll also know that having him part of the setup at all times is integral to keep Washington's positive momentum churning.

Alarm bells are ringing for some. But looking at the way Peters has gone about his business so far, it would be surprising if McLaurin's extension didn't have a successful resolution sooner rather than later.

Watch this space.
