NFL insider: Rams could hire Frank Reich to eventually replace Sean McVay

It sounds like the Los Angeles Rams could make an offseason move to prepare for the eventual departure of head coach Sean McVay.

For a piece published Wednesday, NFL insider Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post explained why the Rams could hire former Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich this winter after offensive coordinator Liam Coen returned to the University of Kentucky.

"McVay is year-to-year as head coach despite his pledge to return next season," La Canfora wrote. "It would be surprising for him to stay beyond 2023, and rival teams think the Rams want to get their next guy on board now, rather than tear it up and start over next year."

La Canfora added that "Reich could join the team as associate head coach/offense — or whatever job title is necessary to secure his services" because, as one personnel executive put it, the Rams "want the next guy to be on staff this year."

McVay guided the Rams to a Super Bowl LVI win over the Cincinnati Bengals last February and then reportedly flirted with signing a lucrative deal to work Amazon Prime Video "Thursday Night Football" broadcasts. The 36-year-old ultimately put pen to paper on an extension to remain with the Rams, but he admitted earlier this month he's still "interested in" a broadcasting role.

Back on Jan. 7, ESPN's Adam Schefter pointed out that outlets such as Amazon, Fox, ESPN and NBC filled jobs that McVay potentially could've landed a year ago. In this week's "Football Morning in America" column, NBC Sports' Peter King noted that "no TV network has a $15-million-or-so number one analyst job available for" McVay this offseason.

"I don’t think McVay was interested in being 'just a guy' on TV," King said. "I do think he had some regret over not taking a two- or three-year hiatus last year and taking one of the big TV jobs. Amazon? Maybe Fox? But if he really wanted to jump after winning the Super Bowl, he would have."

As for Reich, he made it known shortly after he was fired by the Colts in November that he wants to be a head coach again. Serving as a coach-in-waiting while living in Los Angeles for a year could prove to be a solid consolation prize for the 61-year-old.
