NFL insider reveals how a new injury 'probably' caused one of the Commanders' top rookies to fall in the draft

The Washington Commanders came away with one the draft's most underrated picks in cornerback Trey Amos at No. 51, but ESPN's Jeremy Fowler recently revealed a newly-discovered back injury is what "probably" caused him to fall into Adam Peters' lap at No. 61.

Washington got a plus starter with second-round defensive back Trey Amos, who has size, speed and instincts. Selecting him at No. 61 was considered great value. One aspect that might have hurt his value slightly: Multiple teams discovered a back injury in the predraft process. This wasn't a major red flag for some teams, but it was at least a mild concern that "probably caused him to slide a bit," as one AFC exec said. However, people around Amos and the Commanders did not seem overly concerned by it. - Jeremy Fowler, ESPN

The Commanders may be rolling the dice at a position that already has a big injury concern heading into 2025

As Fowler notes, the Commanders don't seem concerned with the injury. However, it certainly gives everyone something to monitor over the course of the offseason and even into the regular season.

That's because a potential injury to Amos would add another layer to a cornerback room that already needs Marshon Lattimore to stay healthy. Last year's hamstring injury limited him to just a few games in Washington and it was the likely catalyst behind his poor performances on the field.

Both situations leave what should be the Commanders' top-2 corners in spots where their health will be something to watch. Washington has done a good job of building up the cornerback room during the offseason, but losing one or both of these guys would represent a sizable blow.

The good news is both Mike Sainristil and Jonathan Jones can play inside and outside, so there's flexibility in case something goes wrong with Lattimore or Amos. That certainly helps, but the obvious best-case scenario is a healthy group that can take a nice step forward in 2025.
