The Green Bay Packers ‘ status as a legitimate Super Bowl contender in the NFC took a major hit when All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons tore his ACL in the second half of Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos.
Now, Green Bay defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley must adapt and must find a way to scheme up pressure on opposing quarterbacks now that Parsons isn’t there to serve as a one-man wrecking crew along the front seven and in opposing backfields.
According to NFL Insider Dan Graziano, the rest of the league looks at the Packers much differently without Parsons than they did when Green Bay’s defense was fueled by one of the most consistently dominant players at his position.
“Things will change for the Packers’ defense without Parsons,” Graziano writes of Green Bay. “He elevated other parts of it, and teams will play them differently. They have enough to overcome it and still compete at a high level. But if you’re talking about beating, say, the Bears, Rams and Eagles in consecutive weeks on the road in January, that might be a lot to ask without their best player.”
How teams play the Packers from here on out may be as interesting as watching how Hafley is able to generate additional pressure via the blitz, and how he avoids being exposed in the secondary by quarterbacks such as the Bears’ Caleb Williams on Saturday and a potential matchup in the postseason against Matthew Stafford, given each’s prowess against the blitz.
Parsons’ injury changes things, signficantly, for the Packers whether it derails Green Bay’s championship aspirations could come down to Hafley.
