NFL insider reveals surprising twist in Packers-Jaire Alexander saga

The Jaire Alexander saga has been a big storyline of the Green Bay Packers' offseason. When healthy, he is one of the top cornerbacks in the league, but injuries have limited to 34 games combined over the past four seasons. He carries the third-biggest cap hit on the team in 2025, and Green Bay has no guarantees on how available he will be moving forward.

The Packers have internally expressed frustration over Alexander’s inability to stay on the field. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team explored trade options involving the star cornerback.

While it seemed all but sure that Green Bay and the two-time All-Pro cornerback were on the verge of a split, an NFL insider hints that a surprising turn could be on the way.

According to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Packers and Jaire Alexander are in talks to negotiate a revised deal to keep him with the team.

"The Packers passing on cornerback for the first six rounds seems to signify that Jaire Alexander is staying with the team, barring a unique trade offer or a contractual stalemate," Fowler said.

"The Packers and Alexander are working on a resolution that should materialize soon. A revised contract for Alexander, due $17.5 million in cash this year, to balance his injury history with his longtime status as an elite corner might be the most sensible play."

At this point, the best-case scenario for Green Bay is for Alexander to return on a more affordable deal. The chances of any team offering a draft pick for him appear slim. Additionally, with the Packers’ top two cornerbacks, Nate Hobbs and Keisean Nixon, primarily playing in the slot, the long-term outlook for the outside cornerback position is a concern.

The Packers have a talented secondary. Evan Williams and Xavier McKinney make up a strong safety tandem, while Javon Bullard adds versatility with the ability to play both as a post safety and in the nickel. If Alexander does return and stays healthy, Jeff Hafley should be well-positioned to maximize the full potential of the defensive backfield.
