NFL insider says what Jordan Love's new contract with the Packers will look like
Mark Hoffman/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel-USA TODAY NETWORK

The Green Bay Packers are expected to extend quarterback Jordan Love soon. He is entering his fifth season in the league, the second as a starter, and it's also the last season of a bridge deal the parties agreed to last offseason.

According to NFL Network's insider Ian Rapoport, it's more a question of when, not if Love will sign a deal — and it's expected to come around as one of the largest in the entire league.

"They really couldn't revise that old deal until May. May is now here, I expect the two sides to get together, I expect negotiations to happen. We'll see when a deal will actually go. I just want to take a second and realize the unbelievableness of this. When Jordan Love did that bridge deal last year, what he did was take money now to protect himself in case he was just ok. He was way more than just ok, and the way his season finished last year, he's putting himself in the conversation as one of the really great young stars of this league. You talked about his contract starting with a five, I would echo that. There were for sure questions about that before the season, I don't think anybody has questions now. From my understanding of the situation, it's not if, it's more when Jordan Love becomes one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL."

After the short-term deal the Packers gave him last year, Jordan Love is set to make $11 million this year — a $12.757 million cap hit. After Jared Goff signed a $53 million per season extension with the Detroit Lions, that seems to be a realistic target for Love's representatives.

At the moment, the highest paid quarterback in football is Joe Burrow, who last year signed a five-year, $275 million extension with the Cincinnati Bengals — a yearly average of $55 million.
