The Cleveland Browns are wrapping up OTAs and will be off until training camp begins at the end of July. When camp kicks off, all eyes will be on the quarterback position.
Cleveland currently has four healthy quarterbacks competing for roles, while Deshaun Watson continues to recover from his Achilles injury. Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett bring the most experience to the room. Meanwhile, the Browns doubled down in the draft by selecting Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
Flacco was given some time off during OTAs to allow the younger quarterbacks more reps. With the coaching staff already familiar with what Flacco brings to the table, this opened opportunities for Pickett and Gabriel to work with the starters. Sanders, however, received the fewest reps with players likely to be on the field come Sundays.
That distribution of snaps may align with what one NFL insider recently revealed.
“There were teams that were sort of stunned by how little Shedeur knew relative to what they thought,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer said recently on 92.3 The Fan. “Him being the son of Deion and having played for Pat Shurmur in college.”
"He had a bigger learning curve than Dillon Gabriel. There were teams that were stunned by how little Shedeur knew relative to what they thought. He was pretty far behind"

This may be a case where Sanders simply needs time to catch up, learn the playbook, and get comfortable at the NFL level. Gabriel enters the league with 64 collegiate games under his belt, while Sanders played just 24 games at the FBS level.
Training camp could shift things quickly, and Sanders may be ready to take on a larger role and compete for snaps. During OTAs, he showed flashes of promise with the reps he was given—though it’s important to remember those reps came in shorts and t-shirts, not full pads.
Ultimately, the Browns selected Sanders in the fifth round, and his first task is to earn a spot on the final roster. From there, we’ll begin to see what kind of player he can become.
