NFL insider speculates on New York Giants' likely plan for the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft and he's probably right

No one knows exactly what the New York Giants will do with the No. 3 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.

New York doesn't have a longterm answer at quarterback after signing veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston earlier this offseason. As a result, there's plenty of speculation that New York could target a quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick (which would likely be Colorado's Shedeur Sanders).

Longtime NFL insider Albert Breer, however, speculated this week that New York will eschew selecting a quarterback in the first round in favor of landing either Colorado CB/WR Travis Hunter or Penn State edge Abdul Carter.

Breer thinks because of the way the Giants have built the quarterback room (Wilson and Winston both have a starter's mentality) that New York will target Hunter or Carter in the first round. Breer added that he could see the Giants being open to selecting a quarterback on day two of the draft.

From SI.com: Taking a Jaxson Dart or Tyler Shough later comes with a totally different context. The context with a guy taken in the top five, generally, is that he’s going to wind up playing (look at how the Titans have set up their quarterback room). The context with a second- or third-round quarterback is more often that he’ll redshirt a year, and you’ll see after that, which would be fine here with Wilson and Winston operating on one-year deals. Ideally, then, Hunter would slide into the Giants’ laps at No. 3, with New York having a need at both corner and receiver. If it’s Carter, it’s a bit more complicated, with the team so invested already in Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns on the edges. But, to me, that would qualify as a good problem to have, like the “problem” the Giants once had in juggling Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka. Carter could play off the ball on early downs, as he did as a Penn State freshman and sophomore, and down in passing situations. My understanding is the team sees all that as workable. And so, if I had to guess right now, I’d say they’d love Hunter, they’d love Carter and they’ll look at quarterbacks on Day 2.

In a perfect world, Hunter (who I think is the best player in the draft), falls to the Giants at No. 3 and then New York lands their quarterback of the future in the second round (as Breer hints at, a quarterback selected in the second round doesn't face the pressure of a quarterback selected in the top five).

It seems likely that the Tennessee Titans will select Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1. That means that New York's draft outcome hinges on what the Cleveland Browns decide to do at No. 2.

If the Giants view Hunter as "their guy", they might have to trade up to No. 2 to get him. The Browns could decide to select Hunter, or another team could trade up with Cleveland to leapfrog the Giants and select the former Colorado standout.

We'll see how it all plays out in a few weeks. It's imperative, however, that New York nails this selection. They can't afford to miss with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft.
