NFL Legend Barry Sanders Announces Update On Health Scare

It's been a year since NFL legend Barry Sanders scared the football world by announcing he had suffered a health scare. But in a new TV special he revealed exactly what it was.

In an interview with CBS Sports, Sanders revealed that he he had, in fact, suffered a heart attack during a recruiting visit for his son. He admitted that he thought it was just heartburn at first before he noticed it was persisting.

"I couldn't believe it, honestly," Sanders said. "I thought it was like heartburn, but it just kind of persisted."

Sanders admitted that the idea of having a heart attack never even crossed his mind. He said that he's currently educating himself on the warning signs for the future and said that it's been enlightening to learn about heart health through the TV special he's been working on.

"Of all things, I don't know why, that just never entered my mind," Sanders said. "I'm learning through this process that there aren't necessarily any warning signs, unless you do what we're encouraging people to do, which is to go the doctor, get tested for LDLC levels, or bad cholesterol. That's the only way to find out if you have high cholesterol. It's not something you're going to be able to feel. You don't have to fit a certain physical profile.

"It's really been an education, for me, learning about how frequent this happens all over the U.S.," Sanders said. "Conversing with these other individuals who are part of this documentary who have very insightful, gripping stories about the journey that they've been on. It's just really amazing. I think it will get a lot of people's attention."

Sanders ranks among the greatest running backs, if not players, in NFL history. He holds the NCAA single-season rushing record and retired just shy of breaking the NFL all-time rushing record.

Though Sanders rarely enjoyed playoff success and never came close to winning a Super Bowl, he is one of the most beloved players in NFL history and is a hero among Detroit Lions fans.

We wish him well now that he's healthy again.
