NFL Legend Tom Brady Reveals the Best Advice He Has Ever Gotten

NFL legend Tom Brady has built his career on discipline, preparation and a relentless drive to succeed.

In a recent interview with The School of Hard Knockz, the seven-time Super Bowl champion opened up about the most important advice he ever received: wisdom that shaped both his career and his life.

Brady recalled a pivotal moment during his college years at Michigan. As a sophomore, he often vented to his sports psychologist mentor about feeling overlooked compared to other players. One afternoon, the mentor challenged him directly.

The Advice That Shaped Tom Brady’s Winning Mindset

“He said, ‘Why don’t you quit complaining about what you’re not getting and focus on the things you are getting?’” Brady shared. “If they give you three opportunities in practice, make the most of them.”

That shift in mindset became a cornerstone of Brady’s approach, focusing on the opportunities in front of him rather than dwelling on what he lacked.

Brady explained that the lesson went beyond football. It was about taking responsibility for his own path.

“Accountability is something we need to ingrain in ourselves all the time,” Brady said. “You have to get outside of your comfort zone.”

Brady is no stranger to being doubted. Coming out of college, he was famously passed over by every NFL team multiple times before the New England Patriots drafted him in the sixth round in 2000.

“I had about 32 teams that doubted me,” Brady said. “You’ve got to listen to what’s inside of you.”

That mindset was never more evident than in Super Bowl LI. Down 28-3 against the Atlanta Falcons, Brady led one of the most remarkable comebacks in sports history.

On February 5, 2017, the Patriots trailed deep into the third quarter before Brady orchestrated a rally that tied the game 28-28 by the end of regulation. In overtime, the Patriots completed the comeback with a 34-28 victory: the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.

Brady’s career accomplishments speak for themselves:

  • Seven Super Bowl titles
  • Three NFL MVP awards
  • 649 career passing touchdowns
  • Over 89,000 passing yards (the most in NFL history)
  • Never missed the playoffs in a full season as a starter

He has played in 17% of all Super Bowls ever held and holds a winning record against every NFL team.

Even at 48 years old, Brady’s influence on the game remains strong. His upcoming statue unveiling at Gillette Stadium will cement his legacy in New England history.

Tom Brady Passing on the Lessons

When asked about his personal hero, Brady didn’t hesitate.

“My dad’s my hero. I am who I am because of my dad,” he said.

He hopes to instill the same belief and encouragement in his own children.

“Whatever they set their mind to, they’re going to accomplish,” Brady said.

One of his guiding principles for the younger generation is to live a life they can be proud of every day.

“Be proud of the person you see in the mirror,” he said. “The life you lead is the lesson you teach.”

Looking back, Brady credits that early piece of advice; focus on what you have, not what you lack, as one of the main reasons he succeeded. It pushed him to take ownership of his career, work harder than anyone else, and never stop improving.

For aspiring athletes and anyone chasing big goals, Brady’s takeaway is simple: control what you can, work for every opportunity and never quit.
