Key Points:
The San Francisco 49ers got back to winning ways on Sunday, and it was thanks in large part to another strong performance from star running back Christian McCaffrey. The Niners were on the road at MetLife Stadium for Week 9. They took down the New York Giants, 34-24, to improve to 6-3 on the season.
McCaffrey was incredible on Sunday, finishing with 28 carries for 106 rushing yards and one touchdown. The two-time All-Pro RB also caught five passes from quarterback Mac Jones for a game-high 67 receiving yards and one TD, which led to another historic feat from the 29-year-old.
McCaffrey is in the midst of another big year. Now in his fourth season in San Francisco, the three-time Pro Bowler has started all nine games for the Niners thus far. During that stretch, McCaffrey has registered a league-high 168 carries for 596 yards and two touchdowns. He’s also recorded 61 receptions for 626 yards and four receiving TDs.
McCaffrey, who became a first-time dad during the offseason with his wife Olivia Culpo, has been making all sorts of history on the field this term. He was back at it on Sunday with his inspired performance against the Giants.
On Monday, the NFL announced McCaffrey’s latest historic milestones
“It was the 16th game in McCaffrey's career in which he scored a touchdown on the ground and through the air, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk for the most such games in NFL history,” read a post from the league’s official website.
McCaffrey now reigns supreme as the only player in NFL history to score a rushing and a receiving TD in the same game. He’s achieved this amazing feat 16 times in his career.
That wasn’t the only bit of history McCaffrey made on Sunday.
“McCaffrey also broke a tie with Hall of Famer Jim Brown and Priest Holmes for the most career games with at least 100 rush yards, one rush touchdown, 50 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown,” the NFL wrote.
McCaffrey continues to find his name alongside some of the greatest offensive players in the sport's history. The fact that the Niners star now stands above legends such as Faulk, Brown and Holmes speaks volumes about McCaffrey’s legacy at this point in his career.
The 2023 Offensive Player of the Year will now look to keep his foot on the gas in San Francisco’s next game. This comes in the form of a divisional rivalry matchup against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10. The 49ers will host that game at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 9, with kickoff scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET.
