Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs looked to jump to 5-3 on the 2025 NFL season in Week 8, hosting Marcus Mariota and the Washington Commanders at Arrowhead Stadium on "Monday Night Football." The Chiefs were coming off an impressive 31-0 shutout win over AFC West rival Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.

Coming into Monday night’s game, Mahomes had totaled 39,966 passing yards over his nine-year career with the Chiefs, including postseason play. That breaks down to 34,152 yards in the regular season and 5,814 in the playoffs. On the first play of the second quarter, Mahomes connected with wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster for a five-yard gain, marking his 38th passing yard of the night.

In doing so, Mahomes has now surpassed 40,000 career passing yards, including the playoffs, becoming just the second player in NFL history to reach the milestone. He joins Indianapolis Colts legend Peyton Manning, who totaled a record 41,082 passing yards over his first nine seasons. However, Mahomes holds the edge in Super Bowls during that span, winning three compared to Manning’s one.

While Mahomes and Manning rank among the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, neither holds the regular-season record for most passing yards through the first nine years of a career. That distinction belongs to former Atlanta Falcons MVP Matt Ryan, who amassed 37,701 yards over his first nine seasons.

"Patrick Mahomes joins HOF Peyton Manning as the only players ever with 40,000+ pass yards in their first 9 seasons, including playoffs #ChiefsKingdom," NFL+ wrote on X.

Following the "Monday Night Football" matchup against the Commanders, Mahomes and the Chiefs will hit the road for an AFC Championship rematch in Week 9, facing Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.
