The Philadelphia Eagles crushed the Kansas City Chiefs' bid for a third straight Super Bowl on Sunday night, winning by a final score of 40-22.
Just about every single playmaker for the Eagles stepped up in Super Bowl 59. The defensive line had six sacks on Patrick Mahomes, as Josh Sweat and Milton Williams combined for 4.5 sacks. And yet, Super Bowl MVP was awarded to an offensive player on Philly's roster. To be fair, the right pick was made.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts completed 17-of-22 pass attempts for 221 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also had 72 yards and a score on the ground. Outside of his early pick, he was very calm against a well-coached Kansas City defense.
Shortly after the game ended, Hurts was named Super Bowl MVP. That end Mahomes' two-year streak of winning the award.
Even though Hurts could've bragged about his latest accomplishment, he shined the spotlight on his defense. He told FOX sideline reporter Erin Andrews that defense wins championships. After watching tonight's game, it's safe to say that's a fact.
Leading up to tonight's game, Hurts told reporters that he was motivated by the Eagles' loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.
"That loss lit a fire in me," Hurts said. "Every game teaches you something, good or bad. That defeat made me wiser and more determined. To have this opportunity again is exactly what I've been working toward."
Hurts had to wait two years to get revenge, but we'd have to imagine he's feeling pretty good right now.
Congratulations to Hurts on an incredible Super Bowl performance.
