NFL Owner and SMU Alumni dies at 65

Jim Irsay, the longtime owner of the Indianapolis Colts, passed away at his home on Wednesday. He was 65.

Irsay leave behind a legacy marked by passion for people and a deep love for football and community. Taking over as owner of the Colts in 1997 following the death of his father, Bob Irsay, Jim became the youngest owner in the NFL at the time. Over nearly three decades, he helped transform the Colts into one of the league’s most successful franchises and positioned himself as one of the NFL’s most influential figures.

Under Irsay's leadership, the Colts experienced a golden era, highlighted by two Super Bowl appearances and a victory in Super Bowl XLI in 2007. He navigated the franchise through its most pivotal moments, including the controversial but necessary decision to part ways with legendary quarterback Peyton Manning after the 2011 season and draft Andrew Luck in 2012.

Beyond football, Irsay was known for his colorful personality and unorthodox behavior. Whether it was handing out $100 bills to fans, performing with the Jim Irsay Band, or sharing his thoughts on social media, he defied the typical NFL owner mold. His passion extended to collecting rare memorabilia, curating the "Jim Irsay Collection." It was a world-class exhibit featuring everything from iconic guitars to Muhammad Ali’s championship belt. Despite receiving a billion-dollar offer for the collection, Irsay refused.

Irsay’s struggles with substance abuse were well known, and he faced legal consequences and multiple rehab stints. But rather than hide from these issues, he used them as a platform for advocacy. He and his family launched “Kicking the Stigma,” a campaign that raised over $25 million to support mental health initiatives and addiction treatment. His openness helped reduce stigma and opened new conversations about wellness in professional sports.

Jim Irsay’s daughters, including Carlie Irsay-Gordon, have long been involved in the Colts' operations and are expected to carry on his legacy. Irsay had made it clear he intended to keep the franchise in the family. His passing marks the end of a unique chapter in NFL history.

One led by a dreamer who embraced the game. His impact on the Colts, the league, and countless lives through charitable efforts ensures his legacy will endure well beyond his time.
