NFL picks: Week 17

Here's a look at our picks against the spread as of Tuesday, Dec. 25. Lines are from Pinnacle Sports.

Week 16 picks went 11-5 and are 120-115-4 overall.

1 of 16

Giants -6.5 vs. Cowboys

Jerry Jones insinuated that the Cowboys would play their starters on Sunday, but for how long? This game has no playoff implications for the Cowboys, who have already clinched the NFC East. It would seem likely that at least Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott would sit shortly after the start of the game. New York has covered in four of its last five games.

Saints -7.5 vs. Panthers

Fans in New Orleans are apparently paying to see Teddy Bridgewater vs. Kyle Allen in this Week 17 classic. Just as significant for the Panthers is that they could protect star running back Christian McCaffrey, cutting the Saints defense another major break.

3 of 16

Patriots -13.5 vs. Jets

New England got some help from Philly last week, making the Pats the likely No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs, but they still have to take care of business against the Jets. The Patriots are only 8-7 against the spread (ATS) this season, one of Bill Belichick's worst ATS performances as head coach, but should be motivated to finish strong so they can get a bye next week.

4 of 16

Lions +7.5 at Packers

Green Bay got more Aaron Rodgers heroics last week in overtime, but playing extra won't help for a team that's already banged up. The Lions won this matchup in Detroit in early October and should be able to give Green Bay a game if they're motivated.

5 of 16

Texans -7 vs. Jaguars

Houston lost a heartbreaker at Philly last week but still has reason to play and maintain the No. 3 seed with an outside shot at the No. 2 seed. Jacksonville's defense is really coming around again. It looks like Blake Bortles will finish out the year as the starter for Jacksonville, but the Jags haven't scored more than 17 points over their last four games.

6 of 16

Buccaneers (pick'em) vs. Falcons

Is this the Tampa Bay swan song for Jameis Winston and head coach Dirk Koetter in Tampa Bay? The team managed to hang in for much of last week at Dallas, and the Falcons continue to be banged up at running back, among other areas. Atlanta is tied for the league-worst ATS record at 5-10, and last week's win came with the help of Taylor Heinicke at quarterback for the Panthers.

7 of 16

Bills -3.5 vs. Dolphins

Last week wasn't pretty for either team, but Miami seems to be in an even bigger free fall after scoring just seven points at home vs. Jacksonville. Traveling to Buffalo in late December is always a tough task, and Miami's only road win was in Week 2.

8 of 16

Raiders +13.5 at Chiefs

Raiders +13.5 at Chiefs

Oakland got a triumphant win in what could be its final game at Oakland Coliseum and is 2-2 in its last four games, as Derek Carr has avoided turning the ball over lately. The Raiders don't have a great chance to spoil K.C.'s No. 1 seed on the road but proved they can score on the Chiefs, putting up 33 points in Week 13. The Chiefs are also 0-4 against the spread without Kareem Hunt.

9 of 16

Eagles -6.5 at Redskins

Eagles -6.5 at Redskins
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

Philly continues to hold out hope for a playoff spot but will  need help from the Bears, who are playing the Vikings. The Eagles also have to take care of business on the road at Washington, where Josh Johnson has given the offense a spark. The same can be said for the Eagles with Nick Foles. The team has won four of five, with the last two wins coming with Foles under center.

10 of 16

Browns +6 at Ravens

Browns +6 at Ravens

Can Baker Mayfield and Co. play spoilers? Baltimore is the hot team right now, winning five of six games with Lamar Jackson under center, but the offense isn't exactly dominating. It has averaged less than 20 points per game over the last three weeks, so Cleveland has a chance to keep the game close if it can avoid turnovers.

11 of 16

Steelers -14.5 vs. Bengals

Steelers -14.5 vs. Bengals

Steelers fans are cheering for the Browns on Sunday, as they need Cleveland to beat the Ravens for Pittsburgh to make the playoffs. Pittsburgh also needs to take care of business against the banged-up Bengals. The Steelers have won only one of their last five games but have played well over the last two weeks and do a good job stopping the run, which should make it difficult for Joe Mixon and Co. to move the ball.

12 of 16

Vikings -5 vs. Bears

Vikings -5 vs. Bears

Minnesota will make the playoffs with a win vs. Chicago. Luckily, the Bears can only gain ground in the playoffs with a win and a loss by the Rams, so head coach Matt Nagy could call off the dogs late in the game depending on the scoreboard. The Bears are 11-4 against the spread this season, best in the NFL, but are just 4-3 ATS on the road.

13 of 16

Chargers -6.5 at Broncos

Chargers -6.5 at Broncos
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

Denver barely showed up at Oakland last week, though it did beat the Chargers in L.A. earlier this season. The Broncos have lost three straight games and seem lost without Chris Harris Jr. and Emmanuel Sanders. The Chargers will be motivated to win, as a slipup by the Chiefs would give them the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

14 of 16

Seahawks -13.5 vs. Cardinals

Seahawks -13.5 vs. Cardinals
Matt Kartozian / USA Today Sports Images

Pete Carroll isn't expected to give Arizona a break, using the Seahawks starters despite the team already clinching a playoff spot. Josh Rosen continues to struggle and could be overwhelmed in this environment.

15 of 16

Rams -10 vs. 49ers

Rams -10 vs. 49ers
Gary A. Vasquez / USA Today Sports Images

The Rams need a win to keep the No. 2 seed but face a challenge against a 49ers team that's playing well recently. San Francisco has won two of its last three games and just fell short against Chicago last week. Though, it's worth noting all three of those games were at home, and the 49ers lost their last two road games by 18 points and 27 points, respectively. The 49ers are also likely to be without top running back Matt Breida. Todd Gurley's status remains up in the air for the Rams.

16 of 16

Colts -2.5 at Titans

Colts -2.5 at Titans
Mykal McEldowney / USA Today Sports Images

A recurring elbow injury continues to hound Marcus Mariota, and early signs point to the Titans rolling with Blaine Gabbert. Adding to the bad news are the recent losses on defense of Logan Ryan and Jurrell Casey. Mike Vrabel probably deserves Coach of the Year if the Titans are able to pull this one out despite all their injuries, though they have won four games in a row and six of eight.

It's time for the Bengals to meet their disgruntled star halfway

As Trey Hendrickson prepares to end his holdout, it's time for the Cincinnati Bengals to meet their star edge-rusher halfway. On Tuesday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Hendrickson plans to end his holdout amid a prolonged contract dispute by reporting to Bengals camp on Wednesday despite still seeking an extension. "Reporting to camp stops the $50,000 per day fines and also serves as a good-faith gesture to try to jumpstart negotiations," Schefter wrote. Hendrickson is owed $18.7M in 2025. Last season, Hendrickson led the NFL in sacks (17.5). He originally signed a four-year, $60M contract with the Bengals during 2021 free agency and later signed a one-year extension in July 2023 to keep him Cincinnati through 2025. With no guarantees beyond this upcoming season and the edge-rusher market exploding recently, Hendrickson certainly has a valid argument to demand an extension. Meanwhile, Cincinnati has few (if any) good reasons not to reward their best defensive player. Hendrickson, 30, has been one of the league's most prolific pass-rushers since joining the Bengals. Former agent Joel Corry, writing for CBS Sports, brushed aside concerns about a potential drop-off in production while pointing to Pittsburgh Steelers edge T.J. Watt's recent contract extension. As Corry noted, Watt, who became the league's highest-paid non-quarterback when he agreed to a three-year, $123M extension earlier this offseason, is roughly two months older than Hendrickson. "Hendrickson also accounted for 48.6% of Cincinnati's sacks last season while Watt was responsible for 28.8% of Pittburgh's," Corry wrote. On Monday, Schefter shared that the main sticking point in Hendrickson's contract dispute is guaranteed money, with the Bengals hesitant to provide any guarantees beyond 2025 on a potential three-year deal. As productive as Hendrickson has been for the Bengals — his 57 sacks since 2021 only trail Watt and Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett — the front office should be doing everything in its power to ensure he finishes his career in Cincy. Hendrickson ending his holdout is the first step to the sides reaching a resolution. The next is the Bengals giving him an extension commensurate to his production.

Maple Leafs Top Prospect Shatters Expectations at World Junior Showcase

The World Junior Summer Showcase is in full swing, and Maple Leafs top prospect Ben Danford is shattering expectations, truly proving how good of a player he can be. The Toronto Maple Leafs' defensive prospect, Ben Danford, is among the 44 players who were invited to Hockey Canada's World Juniors Summer Showcase. Hockey Canada finally unveiled the 44 prospects who will head to Minnesota for the showcase, after they held the roster release back while the organization dealt with several injuries, which begins Sunday and runs through August 2 in Minneapolis. Defensive prospect Ben Danford is the only Maple Leafs player invited to the annual showcase, where Canada's World Junior staff will get their first look at what their team might look like for the 2026 World Juniors, which will also take place in Minnesota in December. Danford is being called the best player at the World Juniors Summer Showcase Danford has been exceeding expectations, and one source revealed that he has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase so far. The source said Danford is steady, smart, and hard to ignore on the ice. 'Ben Danford has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase he's steady, smart, and impossible to ignore. Makes every shift count, whether he's breaking up plays or starting the rush. Canada's blue line is in good hands.' - An unnamed source The Maple Leafs selected Danford with their first pick (31st overall) at the 2024 NHL Draft. During his visit to Toronto's development camp earlier this month, the defender revealed that he's receiving mentorship from current Leafs defensemen as well as some alumni like Mark Giordano. The 6-foot-2 Danford could make for an excellent fit for Canada should he make the team. He is responsible in his own end, and he demonstrated leadership capabilities when he was named captain of the Oshawa Generals ahead of the 2024-25 OHL season.

Mets’ Juan Soto breaks silence on concerning injury after blowout loss to Padres

The New York Mets, despite plenty of ups and downs, have been one of the best teams in all of Major League Baseball so far this season, but they know they will need to stay healthy in order to stay at the top of the NL East and make a push for a World Series. On Tuesday night, the Mets suffered a significant injury. During the fourth inning of a critical series against the San Diego Padres, star outfielder Juan Soto fouled a ball off of his foot and was pulled from the game with a foot contusion. After the game, Soto gave an optimistic update on the status of his foot, via SNY. “I think it’s gonna be good,” Soto said. “I think it’s gonna be good. We’ve just got to get the swelling down. Whenever the swelling is down, I think we’re gonna be fine. X-rays are negative, so it’s a good sign. We’ve just got to wait for the swelling to come down and go back to where I’m at.” Soto also addressed his pain level after the game, after appearing to be in a world of hurt when he went down on the field originally. “It’s actually numb,” he said. “I don’t feel anything right now. It’s getting a little stiff but we’re gonna see in the morning how it goes.” Soto has been finding his stride of late for the Mets after some rocky moments earlier in the season, so New York will want to have him back in the lineup as soon as he can possibly get out there. For the season coming into Tuesday, Soto had racked up 25 home runs and 62 RBI. He was hitting just .249, but was still an on-base machine with an MLB-leading 84 walks. The Padres went on to beat the Mets very comfortably in a 7-1 blowout on Tuesday night, but New York still sits in the top spot in the NL East by a half-game over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets and Phillies are two of the best teams in baseball, so the health of a player like Soto can go a long way toward deciding who comes out on top.

Browns owner debunks popular Shedeur Sanders narrative

Shortly after the Cleveland Browns traded up in the fifth round of the 2025 draft to take Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders with pick No. 144, multiple members of the NFL community strongly suggested that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam essentially forced Sanders on general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski. The fact that Sanders is clearly Cleveland's fourth-choice option at the position behind fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, veteran Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett during training camp has done little to quiet such chatter. While speaking with reporters on Tuesday afternoon, Haslam insisted that Berry was responsible for the drafting of Sanders. Haslam added that Stefanski will ultimately decide which quarterback starts Cleveland's regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. For an article published on April 28, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand wrote that the club's desire for "attention" was "one of the reasons [the Browns] drafted Sanders after previously selecting quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round for football reasons." Some thought in the spring that the Browns could be selected for the 2025 edition of the "Hard Knocks: Training Camp" show, but that assignment instead went to the Buffalo Bills. Pickett is spending the final days of July recovering from the worrisome hamstring injury he picked up this past Saturday. Sanders should receive additional valuable reps during training camp practices with Pickett sidelined, but Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated was sure to say on Monday that the former Colorado star "isn’t going to start" Cleveland's Week 1 game against Cincinnati. If Pickett can't participate in Cleveland's joint practice with the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 6, Flacco almost certainly will end that day as the favorite to get the nod for the matchup versus the Bengals. Interestingly, Haslam indicated on Tuesday that he wants both Gabriel and Sanders to take snaps in meaningful games against live defenses before the Browns have to determine what they will do with their pair of 2026 first-round draft picks. Berry said ahead of the final weekend of July that he's willing to stash Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders on the active roster for Week 1. It sounds like Haslam would have nothing to do with such a decision, regardless of what certain fans and analysts want to believe about how Berry and Stefanski view Sanders this summer.
