NFL reveals extremely confusing decision with Dallas Cowboys' 2024 schedule
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL has NFC East fans scratching their heads after announcing the 2024 schedule as the league won't have the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles facing each other on primetime.

The news is a big surprise since it's been over 20 years since that happened. You read that right.

Since 2003, the Cowboys and Eagles have played a night game every single year, per Pro Football Reference. These two teams facing each other under the lights was one of the most consistent yearly traditions in the league and NFL has weirdly taken it away from us in 2024.

I don't use "weirdly" sparingly, either. After all, the NFC East is expected to be a tight race once again, with DraftKings listing them with the exact same betting odds to win the division (+130). It's not like one of these two teams is expected to have a losing record by the end of the year.

Why not take a chance and put the Cowboys at Eagles game from Week 17 under the lights in what could be a game that determines the division champion?

The Cowboys and Eagles are set to play in Week 10 and Week 17. Here are the primetime games for each of those slates:

Week 10

TNF: Bengals @ Ravens
SNF: Lions @ Texans
MNF: Dolphins @ Rams

W
eek 17
TNF: Seahawks @ Bears
SNF: Dolphins @ Browns
MNF: Lions @ 49ers

Overall, those are pretty good games but are they enough to push out Cowboys vs. Eagles twice? It's also not like the league couldn't have moved things around to make it work.

Factor in the fact that the Cowboys remain a TV ratings monster and it becomes even more odd. Why not tap into that by putting one of the most watched rivalries in the league on primetime?

Ultimately, the Cowboys and Eagles will still go to war on the gridiron so fans can be glad about an early bedtime but this is one decision from the NFL that I can't wrap my head around. It just feels off to not have these two NFC East squads go at it at night.
