Having a good schedule can be the deciding factor between making the NFL Playoffs and taking a trip to Cabo in January. The LA Chargers benefited from a good schedule in 2024, making the most out of it to win 11 games and make the NFL Playoffs.
The Chargers are not getting the same benefit in 2025. As a second-place team, the Chargers' schedule is significantly harder than it was last season. Not only are the opponents better, but the Chargers have to battle an inherent disadvantage that no other team in the league has.
The Chargers have (by far) the most travel miles in the league next season. It's so bad, in fact, that the Chargers have over 2,000 more travel miles than the second-place team (the LA Rams) and over 18,000 more miles than the median, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

To be fair, the Chargers are always near the top of these lists simply because where the team is located. Teams on either coast always have more miles traveled than teams that are closer to the center of the country.
However, because the Chargers have to travel down to Brazil to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1, they have far more miles than any other team. Heck, the Rams are playing an international game as well and the Chargers still have 2,254 more miles on their schedule.
That is the distance between Las Vegas and New York City.
It's also notable that the Chargers' opponent in Brazil has far fewer miles despite making the same trip and also playing in the AFC West. The Chiefs have 15,391 fewer miles traveled than the Chargers in 2025. That's over 60% of the Earth's circumference.
Comparing the Chargers to the bottom team on the list, the Cincinnati Bengals, is even more mind-boggling. The Bengals and Chargers will both compete for the NFL Playoffs and there is a chance the two teams play in January. If they do, the Chargers are going to have far more wear on their tires than the Bengals.
The Bolts will travel 28,333 more miles than the Bengals in 2025. To go that far, the Chargers would have to start in Los Angeles, travel around the entire Earth's circumference back to Los Angeles, and keep going until they get to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where the Week 1 game will be played.
So even without the team's trip to Brazil, the Chargers have an entire globe's worth of travel over the team with the least amount of travel in 2025. And somehow, the NFL schedule is supposed to be fair.
