Welcome back to the best time of the year, my friends. The NFL is finally back, and our old friends Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth will be back in the booth this week for the season's first edition of "Sunday Night Football."
We've got a doozy to kick things off, too, as the Dallas Cowboys will travel up north to face off against the New York Giants. Let's dive into the NFC East matchup and find the best way to attack "SNF" from a betting perspective.
The Cowboys and Giants will kick off the 2023 "Sunday Night Football" slate by renewing their heated rivalry, one that's been one-sided for six years. Dallas has won 11 of its last 12 games against New York by an average of 11.2 points per game, and Dak Prescott is 10-2 against the Giants in his career.
This should be an improved Giants team in head coach Brian Daboll's second year at the helm. The addition of tight end Darren Waller finally gives Daniel Jones a No. 1 receiving option, and the defensive line is still stacked with stars such as Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Leonard Williams.
But the Cowboys should be able to take a step forward, as well. Gone are running back Ezekiel Elliott and right end Dalton Schultz, but Elliott's departure could be an addition by subtraction. Tony Pollard was one of the most efficient offensive weapons in the NFL on a touch-by-touch basis last year, and he should shine in his new feature role. Wide receiver Brandin Cooks also gives this offense another deep threat.
The Cowboys are 3.5-point favorites on the road, but that may be a bit short.
It's no secret the Cowboys have owned the Giants in the Prescott era, and we're looking for that to continue in Week 1.
The Giants were the fifth-luckiest team in the NFL last season, per Team Rankings. New York went 8-4-1 in one-score games thanks in large part to superior coaching, but Daboll can only do so much against a more talented team. The Cowboys have the offensive line to quell the Giants' greatest strength, and Micah Parsons is the ideal weapon to shut down Jones' dual-threat ability.
The Giants are getting too much credit for overachieving last year, so we're taking the discount on Prescott and the 'Boys.
Waller was the star of training camp for the Giants all offseason. The former Pro Bowler took no time becoming Jones' favorite target in practice, and he should immediately step in as the No. 1 receiving option in this offense.
Before his injury-riddled campaign in 2022, Waller averaged more than 60 receiving yards per game in three straight years with the Las Vegas Raiders. He averaged 8.6 targets per game over those three seasons, and he has a chance to get that number in the double digits in this new offense.
Waller was limited in Friday's practice and was listed as questionable with a hamstring issue, but multiple reports Sunday indicate that he will play against the Cowboys Sunday night.
