The Los Angeles Chargers will host the Chicago Bears on "Sunday Night Football" this week, which makes us wonder what the NFL was thinking making this a primetime matchup. Either way, football is football, and the bets all count the same no matter which teams are squaring off.
Let's break down this mediocre matchup and target some winning bets, shall we?
In a surprise to no one, the Chargers are one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL once again. All that talent and all those Pro Bowlers, yet Los Angeles is 2-4 through seven weeks and on the outside looking in at a playoff spot.
The biggest issue for the Chargers has been their passing defense which ranks dead last in the NFL in yards allowed per game. The coaching staff hasn't been getting the job done, either, and a loss this week could spell the end for Brandon Staley in L.A.
The Bears, on the other hand, are in a much better mood after a dominant victory against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7. Rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent filled in for Justin Fields and played better than expected in relief, and he'll get the start again this week.
The Chargers shouldn't be favored by more than one possession against the Little Giants right now. Los Angeles has no home-field advantage at SoFi Stadium, and this is a matchup the Bears can exploit.
Bagent should have success throwing the ball against the worst pass defense in the league. Chicago also found a solution to its running back problem, as D'Onta Foreman racked up 120 total yards and three touchdowns last week in his first action as the starter. As long as the Bears can take care of the ball and take advantage of red-zone trips, the Chargers offense won't be able to score enough to cover this spread.
Ekeler hasn't looked the same after returning from his three-week absence in Week 6. The Chargers running back has recorded just five catches and 36 receiving yards over the last two games.
In a matchup against a Bears defense that has the fewest sacks in the NFL, Justin Herbert will have plenty of time to drop back and hit his receivers down the field. There may not be a need to check it down to Ekeler in the flat, so we're taking the under here.
