Arizona Cardinals defensive end Josh Sweat was called for a personal foul against San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in their game on Sunday.
The 49ers remained unbeaten after fending off the Cardinals’ comeback attempt, 36-30, at Levi’s Stadium. Purdy led San Francisco’s offense, completing 15-of-27 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns.
But late in the game, the one-time Pro Bowl QB was involved in a contentious incident. Purdy took a hit from Sweat, drawing a roughing-the-passer call.
It happened at the 9:14 mark of the fourth quarter, as Sweat rushed Purdy on third-and-6. Officials ruled that Sweat made contact with Purdy’s facemask.
Purdy’s pass was incomplete, but the foul erased what would have been a fourth-down stop. It instead gave San Francisco first-and-goal at the Arizona 5. The 49ers scored on Purdy’s touchdown pass to George Kittle shortly after, extending their lead to 29-20.
Rule 12, Section 2, Article 11 of the 2026 NFL rulebook defines roughing the passer as “any physical acts against a player who is in a passing posture (i.e. before, during, or after attempting a pass) which, in the game official’s judgment, are unwarranted by the circumstances of the play will be called as fouls.”
The NFL will now review the play to determine whether Sweat’s foul warrants a fine. A possible $17,911 fine for a first offense is on the table under the NFL’s fines schedule. The fine goes up to $23,882 for a second offense.
The NFL will announce its punishment decision via the weekly fines update, which is typically released Saturday afternoons.
San Francisco’s victory came at the cost of losing offensive tackle Trent Williams, who left the game in the second half with a stinger. The 49ers also lost wide receiver Mike Evans to a rib injury during the game. The silver lining is that both injuries aren’t considered serious, and they are expected to be back soon.
Purdy and Co. are looking to maintain their place atop the NFC West against the Denver Broncos in Week 4 on Thursday.
