NFL to Make Punishment Announcement After Patrick Mahomes Incident

The Kansas City Chiefs lost their first game of the year Sunday on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. The biggest problem on display for the Chiefs was their inability to get anything going offensively.

Some of the blame falls on quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for just 165 yards and an interception. It was not fully his fault, as the Seahawks generated a ton of pressure on him and the run game did not get going at all, with Kenneth Walker rushing for just 36 yards on 14 carries.

The offensive line was a major issue for Kansas City. Still, it is just one game and they still own a 5-1 record.

During the game, Mahomes was forced to scramble a ton to try and get things going. In Kansas City’s only scoring drive of the third quarter, it took a lot from Mahomes. The Seahawks did give some help along the way.

During a third-and-7 play, the Chiefs committed a holding penalty that likely would have taken them out of field goal range.

During the play, though, Seahawks linebacker Uchenna Nwosu tackled Mahomes by the horse collar as he was scrambling, drawing a 15-yard penalty for a horse collar tackle. The penalties offset and Kansas City got on the board a few plays later.

The penalty could have further punishment for Nwosu. Per the NFL fines and appeals schedule, a horse collar tackle violation typically results in a fine of $17,911 for a first offense and $23,882 for a second offense.

The league will typically make its decision on the incident later this week and Nwosu will have the opportunity to appeal if he deems it necessary. Even in a loss, Mahomes finished as the reason Kansas City stayed in the game as long as it did.
