NFL Top 100 snubs Patrick Mahomes (but Chiefs fans shouldn’t take the bait)

Get ready, Kansas City Chiefs fans. There is something coming your way, and it is going to make you mad. Really mad. It will baffle and bewilder you, and undoubtedly infuriate you. I’m talking about the NFL Top 100 list, and where quarterback Patrick Mahomes ranks, which will likely have Chiefs Kingdom seething.

Since 2011, players from across the league have voted anonymously for who they think the best player in the league is. The rankings are revealed each offseason, and the first handful of names on this year’s list have already been announced. The top 10 will be announced on September 1.

For Chiefs Kingdom, only Mahomes as the top-ranked player—or the top-ranked quarterback, at the very least—will be satisfactory. However, a teaser image from the NFL itself suggests that the three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time league MVP isn’t going to be given that respect.

The NFL shared four top 20 lists from unnamed players on social media. The first, notably, did not include Mahomes at all. Of the four, only two had Mahomes ranked in the top 10. None of the lists had him ranked first overall. Only one list had Mahomes as the top-ranked quarterback, while on the other three, he was behind a mix of Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, and Baker Mayfield.

Ridiculous, right? I can hear you scoffing at that from here.

As the rest of the countdown unfolds and Mahomes’ spot on the list—wherever that may be—is revealed, and before you get too worked up, just remember one thing: the list does not matter. It. Does. Not. Matter. The list is totally arbitrary. It offers some interesting insight into how certain players are viewed by their peers, sure. But is it meaningful? Not really.

Rankings of any kind are always subjective. The players voting on the list are not immune to the same Chiefs fatigue that we’ve seen growing among NFL fans, plus they have their own personal motivations too. Some players might actively dislike the Chiefs or Mahomes for whatever reason and vote accordingly. Others might want to pump up their teammates, and that changes how they shape their vote as well.

It’s impossible to tell the reasoning or motive behind an anonymous list, which is why Chiefs fans shouldn’t waste their energy being bothered by where Mahomes is ranked this year. Whichever spot he is given, it won’t change the facts.

Mahomes has done things that nobody else in the league—or anyone else in the history of the sport, for that matter—has been able to accomplish. Him ranking fourth, seventh, 12th, or 21st in this year’s NFL Top 100 won’t change that, and it won’t take away his three Super Bowl rings and MVP awards. Every Chiefs fan knows that Patrick Mahomes is QB1, and to be honest, that’s all that really matters.
