Detroit is looking more and more like it might run away with the NFC North. That has to be the worst division in the NFL, right? As for Tampa Bay, they might be able to slug it out with New Orleans in the NFC South. No team has really emerged in that division so far (and it might not really happen). This game could matter at the end of the season in terms of the NFC standings. Remember when Tampa used to be in the same division? I don't know why that just came to me.
Detroit Lions vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting Trends and Odds
Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023 - 4:25 p.m. ET
Odds: Detroit -3, Over/under 43.5, Detroit -165 | Tampa Bay +140
My how things change. Detroit is favored on the road this week and there is not anything odd about it. Home-field advantage is not what it once was but this line is basically saying the Lions are close to a touchdown better than Tampa (and I am not sure they are wrong). At this key number, I would expect it to hold for a little while. Most of the bets are on Detroit but the money is coming in on the home underdog.
Picks for Detroit vs. Tampa Bay
Detroit -3, Jared Goff 3+ TDs +225
The Lions are not just good compared to previous iterations of the franchise, they are just plain good this season. They are 4-1 so far and their lone loss was in overtime to Seattle. They are 4-1 ATS too and their last three wins have all been by double digits. Remember, they beat the Chiefs in the opener, on the road too, so it has not just been a bunch of cupcakes like Carolina. I am not putting down Super Bowl futures on them, but the Lions have proven to be a quality team that is not to be taken lightly. Quarterback Jared Goff is playing great and they finally have some playmakers on defense. They are getting teams off the field this season on defense and that is making all the difference. They already had the proof of concept for the offense a year ago. Expect the relatively good time to keep rolling on Sunday.
Over the course of their five games, Goff has thrown three TD passes twice. That means he is not reaching that total more often than not, but I think the payoff justifies the risk on Sunday. The Lions are scoring and Tampa has enough offense that they are going to push them to score at least three or four TDs to win. This bet will definitely keep you locked in for the whole game too and there is nothing wrong with that.
When a line is right at -3 there generally has to be a lot of money (or info) to move it. My instinct is telling me this one stays put.
