The Denver Broncos will play host to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday afternoon in Week 8. We just saw this AFC West matchup two weeks ago on "Thursday Night Football," and Kansas City rolled to a dull, 19-8 win.
What can we expect in the rematch this Sunday? Let's break it down.
The Chiefs continue to roll along without a blip on the radar. Kansas City, after losing at home to the Detroit Lions in Week 1, has now rattled off six straight wins to take back control of the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
Surprisingly, it's been the defense leading the way so far. The Chiefs have the second-best scoring defense in football through seven weeks, and they haven't given up more than 20 points since that Week 1 loss.
As for the Broncos, they showed some signs of life in Week 7 with a 19-17 win against the Green Bay Packers, but that result may be more about Green Bay's struggles than anything else. Denver still ranks 29th in the NFL in total Defense-adjusted Value over Average (DVOA) and dead last in defensive DVOA. Now the defense has to face Patrick Mahomes for the second time in three weeks.
Good luck!
This may seem too obvious after watching these teams combine for just 27 points two weeks ago, but sometimes it's wise not to overthink it.
The Chiefs defense suffocated Wilson and gave up just 197 yards of offense to the Broncos in Week 7. This unit is only building more and more confidence each week.
Denver's defense also did well to slow down Mahomes, as it held the Chiefs 4/13 on third down and their fewest points of the season. Let's hope for a repeat performance this Sunday.
This is a terrible matchup for Denver's passing offense. The Chiefs rank second in the NFL in yards allowed per pass attempt and sixth in completion percentage allowed. Kansas City also shut down Wilson in Week 5, holding him to only 95 yards on 13-22 passing.
Wilson has gone under 200 passing yards in three straight games, and it's hard to imagine he can turn this offense around against a defense that clearly has his number.
