The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders will finish off their season series this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Philly edged out Washington, 34-31, in overtime back in Week 4, but the Commanders have gone downhill since then.
How do we see the NFC East rematch shaking out in Week 8?
Remember when the Commanders were 2-0 through the first two weeks of the season? Those were much better times for Washington fans. Since then, the Commanders are 1-4 with losses to the Eagles, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears and New York Giants.
The biggest issue for Washington has been its offensive line play. Quarterback Sam Howell has been sacked a league-high 40 times through seven weeks, and he's on pace to shatter David Carr's NFL record of 76 sacks taken in a single season. The Commanders gave up six sacks to the Giants in Week 7, and now they have to go up against Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, Jalen Carter and this ferocious Eagles front.
As for Philadelphia, it got back on track with a decisive 31-17 win against the Miami Dolphins in Week 7. The defense, which is finally starting to get healthy, surrendered just one touchdown to the most dynamic offense in the league, and it also added two-time All-Pro safety Kevin Byard via trade on Monday.
If you just look at the final score of the first meeting between these two teams, you'd think the Eagles and Commanders played to a draw. That's not exactly how it played out, though. Philadelphia outgained Washington, 6.2-4.9, in yards per play, and the Commanders only forced overtime because of a touchdown pass from Howell to Jahan Dotson on the last play of regulation.
Jalen Hurts and the Eagles offense moved the ball at will and created a handful of explosive plays against this defense. There's no reason the rematch should be any different.
On the other side of the ball, Howell is going to be under constant pressure throughout the game, and it's unlikely he'll be able to protect the ball as well as he did in Week 4. Lay the points with the Birds.
