NFL World Reacts To The Josh McCown Coaching News

Josh McCown had a long career as a journeyman quarterback in the NFL.

Such a role naturally leads one to believe he could serve well in the coaching ranks, given all the years of being a backup.

But is he ready to be a head coach as soon as next season?

McCown’s name is in the news because he was recently interviewed by the Houston Texans for their head coaching vacancy.

He was interviewed last year as well before the job went to David Culley.

We completed an interview with Josh McCown for our head coaching position today.

His lack of head coaching experience makes the former quarterback an unorthodox potential hire.

It also has fans on social media reacting in a polarizing way.

I would much rather my team hire Josh McCown than Dan Quinn. I definitely understand peoples frustrations considering the lack of qualifications and diversity among coaches. To me the bigger problem is recycling mediocre coaches, not taking shots on new ones.

NFL World Reacts To The Josh McCown Interview

Some of those reacting believe hiring McCown would be a slap in the face to candidates who have spent years rising up the coaching ranks.

I think the @FritzPollard03 is awesome but black coaches should form their own union. The only way the @NFL will take minority hiring seriously is if all black coaches no matter of what they coach… it’s comical how many black coaches are overlooked for people like Josh McCown

The Houston Texans replacing David Culley with Josh McCown & Mike Tomlin being the NFL's only black head coach at the end of the hiring cycle wouldn't surprise me.

There is a specific focus on how McCown is jumping past a long list of minority coaches who have spent so long waiting for an opportunity to lead a franchise.

But it’s important to remember McCown is just one of many people being interviewed by the franchise.

Some who are reacting are actually excited to see his name mentioned.

Josh McCown has been lauded in NFL circles as being a future coach. The jump straight to head coach is interesting, but smart people in the NFL aren’t surprised. I believe @PatKirwan_NFL and @JimMiller_NFL have mentioned it frequently.

I don’t see the Josh McCown interview as a loss for the Texans. You have a young rookie qb who showed some upside and can use a HC like McCown who can develop them with a lot of experience while also running the offense and defense. He has so much IQ, I can see why they talked.

There is no telling how good or bad McCown can be as a head coach because he has never done it before.

It is just still shocking the Texans would consider him over literally anyone else with coaching experience, whether that be a former head coach or coordinator.
