The Baltimore Ravens will never deploy another quarterback onto the field as long as Lamar Jackson is healthy, but Tyler Huntley showed in Saturday’s Week 3 preseason game against the Washington Football Team that he’s starting to really put some things together.
In news that will ease a little bit of the sting, or at least temporarily distract from the injury to running back J.K. Dobbins, Huntley absolutely lit it up. No, it wasn’t Washington’s elite defense full of star starters such as Chase Young and that terrifying defensive front, but the Football Team’s backups are better than most.
See how far the Ravens advance in our NFL playoff predictions
Huntley completed 24 of 33 passes for 285 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Ravens’ 37-3 rout.
Oh, and he ran for another TD, which kicked off the scoring in this one, as the dual threat QB strutted into the end zone near the end of the first quarter:

That was only the beginning of the offensive onslaught Huntley staged.
Now, it’s very possible that in the regular season, this ball might be picked off. On the other hand, Huntley’s ability to run the ball can draw the defense in, and as we’ve see from the likes of Patrick Mahomes and others, off-platform throws on the run can really fool defenders.
Check out this cross-body throw Huntley somehow pulls off and fits in between two defenders for another TD:

OK, so even if you’re skeptical about that toss — which, even on its own merits, has a high degree of difficulty — the downfield strike Huntley threw for his third total TD of the night is about as well as you can place a ball:

Huntley wasn’t done!
James Proche bailed out Huntley a little bit here on a slightly underthrown shot near the pylon, but it was well-placed enough for the Ravens receiver to jump up and make a play on the ball:
Proche said GIMME THAT.

Do you like tight-window throws on the run that aren’t of the across-the-body variety?
Well, Huntley had one of those, too, hitting rookie wideout Tylan Wallace for a 10-yard strike against extremely good coverage:

COOL OFF, SIR.
For some background: Huntley was a 2020 undrafted free agent and a three-year starter at Utah. During his last college season, completed 73.1% of his passes for 3,092 yards, 19 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He also averaged 10.9 air yards per attempt, so Huntley wasn’t dinking and dunking his way down the field.
Did Huntley just play his way out of Baltimore? Is someone going to come calling tomorrow with a trade offer? Who knows, but in what could’ve otherwise been a dud of a night for the NFL preseason, Huntley made things fun.
Without further ado, check out what the Twitterverse had to say about Huntley’s coming-out party.
People said Taysom Hill was better than Lamar Jackson and imma be honest, I don’t think he’s better than Tyler Huntley.

How fast is Ravens backup QB Tyler Huntley?
— Jamison Hensley (@jamisonhensley) August 28, 2021
As of midway 2nd quarter, Huntley has six ball-carrying plays where he's reached a max speed of 18 MPH this preseason, according to @ESPNStatsInfo. That tops all QBs.
Huntley reached a max speed of 18.39 MPH on his 10-yard TD run.
Didn't even give the guy credit for his rushing touchdown haha. FIVE touchdowns (four passing).

I’m not new to the Tyler Huntley hype train. He should’ve been taken no later than Round 3 in the 2020 NFL draft. https://t.co/OTcoFoYIHL

Watching Huntley and McSorley this summer, McSorley had probably been more consistent, Huntley had shown the bigger arm and more big-play ability when the play breaks down.
