Few teams across the league are quick to close in on running backs for a major pay day. Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is one of the few exceptions though generally the position has become greatly devalued.
That reality becomes even more apparent for players coming off any significant injury. Cleveland Browns back Nick Chubb certainly falls into this category.
Chubb tore into the league through his first five seasons. Following a 996-yard campaign in his rookie season, he went over 1,000 in each of the next four campaigns.
But some cruel injury luck brought that run to a screeching halt. The Browns lost Chubb two games into the 2023 season after a nasty leg injury and a broken foot took away half of his 2024.
Now a free agent, Chubb has sought after a fresh start. To this point, he has not found that expected demand. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, a return to the Browns could still be in play.
"Chubb didn’t find a new home in the first wave of free agency, and the Browns will be open to re-signing him in the second wave if they determine they’ll have a role for him," Cabot wrote. "They’ll also likely draft a running back in this rich class to pair with Jerome Ford, or acquire one in a trade or free agency."
Chubb restructured his deal in a significant way last year to stay with Cleveland through the final year of his contract. Now, it seems that being able to claim a roster spot could be his best option.
Once the second wave of free agency comes along, perhaps there is a suitor willing to take a chance on Chubb with a one-year deal. As of now, that option has not presented itself.
Returning to the comforts of Cleveland has its merits, but if they plan on utilizing Ford with another back acquired through the draft or free agency, then Chubb's role for next season appears even more uncertain.
It is a tough draw for Chubb especially when considering the adversity he has overcome. But if there is no interest for him on the open market, perhaps proving himself in a familiar place will be his best shot at revitalizing his career.
