When the final whistle blew in Dallas this past Sunday, the Washington Commanders were left dealing with much more than just a Week 2 loss to the Cowboys. While the spotlight initially focused on quarterback Jayden Daniels’s dislocated elbow, a much more terrifying situation was quietly unfolding in the locker room: safety Nick Cross was being taken to a local Dallas hospital.

Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn revealed that Cross suffered an “internal injury” during the matchup, forcing him to spend Sunday night under medical observation in Texas while the rest of the team flew home.

The Good News

Thankfully, the worst seems to have been avoided. Cross was discharged on Monday morning and immediately began his journey back to Virginia. While Quinn understandably kept the specific details of the internal injury under wraps, Cross being cleared to travel within 24 hours is a massive sigh of relief for the young defensive back and the entire Commanders organization.

A Brutal Start for the Commanders Roster

Cross’s scary hospitalization illustrates a grim reality for the 2026 Commanders: the injury bug isn’t just biting; it’s feasting. Just two weeks into the season, the team is already navigating a brutal gauntlet of physical setbacks.

The trenches, in particular, are taking a beating. On offense, starting guard Sam Cosmi is officially in the concussion protocol, and tackle Brandon Coleman is dealing with a back injury. Defensively, the interior is banged up as well, with defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw nursing a shoulder injury that will limit his participation in practice this week.

Coupled with Daniels’s elbow and Cross’s hospitalization, fans are understandably frustrated, with many taking to social media to lament a season that feels cursed before it even truly began, drawing painful parallels to the injury-plagued nightmare of 2025.

What’s Next?

Cross’s status for Week 3 remains completely up in the air. The Commanders are staring down the barrel of a 0-2 start and now have to prepare for a red-hot Seattle Seahawks team coming to town.

While the team desperately needs Cross’s presence in a secondary that is suddenly looking incredibly vulnerable, internal injuries are notoriously tricky. Expect the Washington medical staff to proceed with extreme caution. Football is paramount on Sundays, but overnight hospital stays are a stark reminder of the sport’s very real human toll.
