Nick Wright has poured cold water on the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback move after the team signed Kyler Murray, arguing the deal does not suddenly turn them into contenders.
The Vikings recently added the former No.1 overall pick on a short-term deal as they reshape their quarterback depth.
However, Wright believes the move has been wildly overhyped.
Speaking on the What’s Wright Show, Wright reacted to Minnesota signing Kyler Murray to a one-year veteran’s minimum contract worth about $1.3 million after the quarterback hit free agency.
“People are trying to convince themselves that Kyler on the Vikings would be dangerous. No, it wouldn’t. Would it be an upgrade over J.J. McCarthy? Sure. Would they be dangerous? No,” Wright said.
The analyst argued that Murray’s arrival might improve Minnesota slightly compared to their current quarterback situation, but it does not transform the team into a serious contender.
Wright went on to list more than 15 quarterbacks he believes are currently better than Murray, mentioning names such as Patrick Mahomes, Sam Darnold, and Joe Burrow while discussing the current hierarchy at the position.
Wright continued by explaining that, in his view, Murray still belongs in the starting quarterback tier but not among the elite players capable of carrying a championship contender.
“He’s at best, the 20th-best quarterback in football. Do I think Kyler is a starter in this league? Yes. Kyler has started more games in this league than Joe Burrow,” he continued.
“But do I think that means there’s any contending possibilities? I don’t,” Wright concluded.
The comments highlight the ongoing debate about Murray’s standing among NFL quarterbacks after several seasons of mixed results.
For the Vikings, the move could still provide valuable experience and depth at the position.
But Wright’s argument is clear: adding Murray alone does not automatically change the franchise’s outlook in the NFC.
