It’s been three months since the Kansas City Chiefs got blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. The loss hurt, but Chiefs fans can at least hang their hat on the fact that the team has three Super Bowls since 2020 and that Andy Reid went from being a “Yeah but…” head coach to now being a surefire Hall of Famer when he hangs up his coaching hat.
One of those wins came against the Eagles, meaning that in the first Reid vs. Nick Sirianni matchup, Reid got the better of his old team. Sirianni won the rematch, however, giving him his first Super Bowl title. One would think that would boost his résumé in head coach rankings, but it didn’t do that for First Things First co-host (and Chiefs fan) Nick Wright.
While ranking the head coaches he'd most likely take if he were an expansion team entering the NFL, Wright conveniently left Sirianni off the list while putting Reid number one. That part isn’t really controversial since Reid has three Super Bowl victories on his résumé and holds the most titles of any active head coach in the league right now.
The rest of Wright’s top 10 consisted of Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin, Kevin O’Connell, Matt LaFleur, Pete Carroll, Dan Campbell, and Sean Payton. He also had John Harbaugh, Mike Vrabel, and DeMeco Ryans ahead of Sirianni, which some would find absolutely ludicrous.
People will likely point to sour grapes when it comes to Wright’s omission of Sirianni from the list, but truthfully, it’s not crazy to want to see a bigger body of work. Sirianni has only been coaching for four years and while his early results have been impressive, guys like Reid and Tomlin, two of Wright’s top five, have been doing it far longer.
Chiefs fans appreciate Wright always sticking by the team, and it should be fun to see opposing fan bases react to these rankings. Sirianni might have beaten the Chiefs this time around, but Reid won the first go-around and still has more accolades than Sirianni could ever dream of, so questioning his spot on the list would be ridiculous.
At the end of the day, Wright’s rankings are bound to ruffle some feathers, but Chiefs fans won’t bat an eye. Reid is still the gold standard, and one loss to Sirianni doesn’t change that. The résumé speaks for itself.
