Nnamdi Madubuike Will Sit Out Week One Against Colts

Nnamdi Madubuike has officially been ruled out for Sunday’s season opener against the Indianapolis Colts as he continues working his way back from the neck injury that ended his 2025 season after only two games. Head coach Jesse Minter provided an encouraging update Friday per Ravens editor Ryan Mink, saying Madubuike is “really, really close” and that the staff feels good about where he is in his recovery.

At his best, Madubuike is one of the league’s most productive pass-rushing defensive tackles. In 2023, he ranked first among defensive tackles in sacks and sixth in both quarterback pressures and tackles for loss, according to PlayerProfiler. His sack production dipped the following season, but his impact was still felt. Madubuike ranked sixth among defensive tackles in run stuffs in 2024 after ranking 83rd the year before.

That versatility will be especially valuable in Minter’s defense, which tends to rely on the front four to generate pressure while keeping extra defenders in zone coverage.

How Madubuike Fits Minter’s Scheme

With the Chargers, Minter ran zone coverage on 80.7% of snaps and used four-man pressures 72.6% of the time while blitzing on just 21.4%, according to Mink. That places significant responsibility on the defensive front to generate pressure without fancy blitz packages or extra rushers.

At his best, Madubuike can do that better than most, especially with players such as Travis Jones, Calais Campbell and Trey Hendrickson around him. Until he returns, Broderick Washington Jr. appears set to take on a larger role up front and will need to help generate enough pressure for Minter to keep leaning on the zone-heavy scheme he prefers.
