When you're in the job that I am covering, the Detroit Lions, your friends and family will often come to you with questions. Usually it's something to the effect of "Can you get me tickets?" The answer is always no, by the way. Also, I can't get you an autograph either.
But sometimes it's to fact-check something. Usually it's something like "How bad is his injury?" Other times, it's something crazy like "Did the Ford family really sell the Lions to Elon Musk?"
Wait, what? Yeah, that's a question that's floating out there right now, and I had to find out where it came from. As usual, it's an A.I. slop site that has a scary amount of people believing it to be true.
Ok, there's a lot to unpack here. First off, $15 billion? Wow! Musk really overpaid. That is not a knock on the Lions, by the way. Last year, Forbes put the Lions' value at $4.15 billion. Also, the Los Angeles Lakers just sold for a record $10 billion. So this would be a new record if it were true. Which it absolutely isn't.
The Lions are just plain not for sale. That's not me making that assumption; that's the Ford family saying it. Not long ago, there were rumors that Amazon owner Jeff Bezos wanted to buy the Lions, and that was shot down because the Lions had plans.
"We’ve been approached about interest in buying the team, but there’s been no serious discussions and the Ford Family plans to own the team and there's (succession) plans in place,"
Those plans were Sheila Ford Hamp. She took on the team shortly after these rumors surfaced. Since then, the Lions have been going in the right direction as a franchise, and the value of the team has only grown. But she has no intention to sell, and fans don't want her to either. The "Sell the team" chants are completely non-existent these days.
On top of all that, Musk has never made any sort of statement about wanting to purchase an NFL team. There is no basis in truth to this whatsoever, and it's concerning that 550 people and counting believed this to be true and shared it with their friends and family.
