Notes from latest Cowboys training camp practice: Long shot rookie makes wild catch, rookie kicked out of practice, Jaydon Blue rises

Training camp practice No. 7 is in the books for the Dallas Cowboys as the preseason inches closer and closer.

It featured fights, a wild catch, and plenty of rookie developments. Without any further ado, let's dive into it.

Brian Schottenheimer keeps his word and kicks out OL Ajani Cornelius

Schottenheimer let 'em know the first week of camp: Throw a punch at practice and you're out. He had to prove he meant it on Wednesday when he kicked out rookie offensive lineman Ajani Cornelius. Later in practice, the Cowboys head coach made the team do sprints after fighting continued.

Schottenheimer said last week he appreciates the passion and physicality, but that fighting leads to ejections in games, and he will treat practice the same.

Traeshon Holden makes a one-handed grab

It was a good day for the undrafted wide receiver out of Oregon, who found the end zone twice on Wednesday. One of them stood out more than the other, though, as quarterback Joe Milton connected with him on a high pass that Holden went up for and brought down one-handed with a fully extended arm.

Holden is a long shot to make the Cowboys' 53-man roster, but it's plays and flashes like this that make him a candidate worth watching out for. The preseason will be huge for Holden, who reunited with former Oregon WR coach Junior Adams (now coaching the same position in Dallas) at the NFL level.

Cornerback battle amid injury chaos

As the Cowboys navigate the latest injury at cornerback with Caelen Carson out for four to six weeks, it's a big mystery how Dallas will handle the position group. Per Dallas Morning News' Joseph Hoyt, two combos that stood out were: Kaiir Elam (outside), DaRon Bland (outside), and Kemon Hall (nickel); and Kaiir Elam (outside), Troy Pride Jr. (outside), and DaRon Bland (nickel).

Hoyt added Israel Mukuamu was in the mix outside, as well.

Kaiir Elam has earned the Cowboys' trust to start outside early in the season. The pending decision. Recently, I wrote about how Bland potentially playing in the slot could be the key to Dallas playing its "best three" at cornerback, and if they expect Trevon Diggs, it could help explain things if the team never reaches out to free agent Stephon Gilmore for a reunion.

Jaydon Blue gets starting reps

When the Cowboys picked Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, many speculated he could have a chance at earning a starting role. He's got a long way to go for that, but Wednesday was a step in the right direction. After turning heads early in training camp, Blue received his "first good burn" of starting reps, per Nick Harris from Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
