Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore has emerged as one of the most recognized and respected cornerbacks in the nation heading into the 2025 season. Sporting News is the latest outlet to name Moore a preseason All-American player, with the Texas native earning first team honors. Moore has been a unanimous first-team pick from preseason outlets and magazines.
Here is what Sporting News had to say about the Irish cornerback.
"Moore (6-2, 190) enjoyed a fantastic freshman year, and the Irish have put a cornerback on our Preseason All-America team for the third consecutive year as a result. Moore totaled 48 tackles, two interceptions and a team-high 11 pass breakups. Opposing quarterbacks had a 46.4% completion rate when targeting Moore, according to PFF. He allowed nine catches on 20 chances in coverage for 64 yards in four playoff games." - Bill Bender, Sporting News
Moore stepped into the starting lineup on a full-time basis in game seven, replacing another star cornerback in Benjamin Morrison, who was lost to a season-ending hip injury. Moore never looked back and the Texas native developed into one of the top cover players in the country as a true freshman. That dominance earned him Defensive Freshman of the Year honors from the Football Writers Association of America. Now a sophomore, Moore is hoping to take his game to another level and become an even more dominant all-around player.
Moore is hoping to become the first Notre Dame cornerback to become a first-team All-American since Julian Love earned consensus honors back in 2018. The last unanimous All-American cornerback for Notre Dame was Shane Walton back in 2002.
Pitt linebacker Kyle Louis is the only Notre Dame opponent on defense to also earn first-team honors from Sporting News. Miami (Fla.) defensive end Reuben Bain Jr. made the second team.
