NY Jets HC Aaron Glenn explains offensive bungle before halftime

At the end of the first half of Sunday’s 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos , the New York Jets had the ball near midfield with a running clock. In the end, mass confusion ensued, with Garrett Wilson screaming at head coach Aaron Glenn as the Jets walked off the field and into the locker room.

Facing a fourth down, quarterback Justin Fields and the offense could have snapped the ball with a couple of seconds remaining to attempt a Hail Mary. At the very least, the “attempt” would have closed out an otherwise well-executed two-minute drill, but the offense allowed the clock to expire.

Speaking to the media following Sunday’s loss, Glenn explained the odd decision to let the clock bleed out.

“I knew we were getting the ball back [to start the second half], and we didn’t know if we had gotten the first down or not,” Glenn told reporters in his postgame presser. “Once it got to fourth down, I was not trying to sit there and try to get a play off, and then give them the ball back [to have] a chance. I don’t think that is a smart thing to do.”

It was a fitting end to a bizarre two-minute drill that lacked urgency from the start. The Jets methodically moved the ball but showed little intent to score, ultimately letting the clock run out without a final play.

Glenn’s cautious explanation did little to satisfy frustrated fans, as New York’s conservative approach once again reflected a team too hesitant in big moments.

Ultimately, the Jets opened the third half with a 10-play, 37-yard series that ended in a Nick Folk field goal, cutting their deficit to one point (10-9).

New York will now go back to the drawing board and prepare for their Week 7 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
