The team wrapped up their final practice before Week One, and Head Coach Aaron Glenn gave an update on the roster’s health heading into Sunday. With Alijah Vera-Tucker already ruled out, Glenn addressed the status of Sauce Gardner and discussed the team’s flexibility along the offensive line. Here’s what he had to say in Friday’s media session. Check out the NY Jets Injury report.
Do you expect to have everyone available on Sunday, other than AVT (Alijah Vera-Tucker), obviously?
We do. We do for the most part. Right now, I can’t say, as far as injuries, that we have anybody that’s on the mend or anything like that, so there’s a good chance we’ll have everybody there.
Sauce (Gardner) had a fibula listed this week. Was that from that weird collision in the end zone a few weeks ago?
You know what, it was, and that’s why I wasn’t really worried about it. I knew he would be ready for Week One, and he’s done everything he needs to do to make sure that he’s fully healthy. So, I look forward to him going out there and battling.
It wasn’t AVT, but when John (Simpson) missed some time on the other side and you guys had the opportunity to mix and match some people on the offensive line, is that a benefit and a minor silver lining in this for you guys? I know, again, it’s the other side, but does it help you at all?
Anytime, when it comes to offensive linemen, the one thing that you look for is versatility at that spot — a center that can play guard, a tackle that can play guard. You hate the fact when it’s just a one-position guy, because then it takes away from some of the things you can do as far as moving and matching guys around. That’s the one thing that we have here with a number of guys that we have, especially our interior guys. So, listen, it was bad that AVT went down, it was, but the thing is, we have guys on our roster that are able to fill in those spots. Again, it’s a terrible injury, I hate that it happened, but we’re moving forward.
Will you give any thought — you talk about flexibility — is John just a left guard, or does he have the ability to go, because I don’t know if you’ll think at all about, (Armand) Membou is a rookie, John is a veteran, pair those two guys together on the right side and then kind of have Olu (Fashanu) on the left?
Again, like I said before, the one thing that we have with our interior guys is they can move around. So, we’ll make sure that we get the right matchup out there.
