Finally, we have been granted the answer to the question that all of America has been losing sleep over.
Will Geno Smith run it back with the No. 7 jersey that he wore 13 years ago as a rookie quarterback for the New York Jets?
Say goodbye to your restless nights. Courtesy of the New York Jets’ official social media, we now know what number Smith and 10 of the Jets’ other 2026 offseason additions will be wearing this season.
Start jotting down notes, Jets fans. There will be a quiz on this before training camp.

Yes, Smith will be taking back the No. 7 jersey. Last season, it belonged to the Jets’ previous starting quarterback, Justin Fields, who has since been shipped off to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The four other legendary Jets players to wear No. 7 since Smith’s tenure are Haason Reddick, Tim Boyle, Braden Mann, and Chandler Catanzaro.
The digit has a solid history for Jets quarterbacks, though. Ken O’Brien (1991) and Boomer Esiason (1993) both made one Pro Bowl with 7s on their backs and “Jets” on their helmets. Only two Jets quarterbacks have been named to the Pro Bowl since Esiason’s 1993 appearance: Vinny Testaverde (1998) and Brett Favre (2008).
Star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick will be donning No. 29 in the back end of New York’s defense, the same digits he wore with the Miami Dolphins. The number belonged to cornerback Jarvis Brownlee last season, who remains on the roster, so Brownlee will be switching.
Demario Davis will also bring back the No. 56 jersey that he wore in green from 2012-15 and 2017.
T’Vondre Sweat’s No. 99 jersey is fitting for a player whose 366-pound frame ranks in the 99th percentile among defensive tackles.
It’s semi-nostalgic for Jets fans to learn that Smith will be bringing back the No. 7. Many fans will be able to pull a dusty No. 7 jersey out from the deepest, darkest depths of their closets.
Ideally, though, these numbers add up to a sum greater than 7 in the win column, which is something the Jets have not accomplished since 2015.
