OC Eric Bieniemy Absent From Chiefs Following Wife’s Shooting

Police responded to a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia at 7:32pm last night, as detailed by a release from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. Mia Bieniemy was found with multiple gunshot wounds and transported to hospital. According to Taylor, she is currently in stable condition. Eric will not be present for today’s Chiefs training camp practice.

Initial reports of Mia’s injury did not include details on the suspected shooter in her case. Since then, the release from the Sheriff’s Office has noted that Elijah Bieniemy – Eric and Mia’s son – was arrested. Elijah has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling. He was taken to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and held without bond.

Depending on his wife’s condition and the manner in which his son’s legal situation plays out, Bieniemy could remain away from the Chiefs for an extended period. The 56-year-old worked with Kansas City from 2013-22. He then spent one year as the Commanders’ OC and another single campaign at UCLA. Bieniemy returned to the NFL last season, serving as the Bears’ running backs coach.

At the onset of the 2026 hiring cycle, the Chiefs were in position to lose Matt Nagy. Kansas City moved quickly in reuniting with Bieniemy as his OC replacement. A return to a familiar setting was set to see Bieniemy once again operate as a non-playcalling offensive coordinator on Andy Reid‘s staff. That setup may now be subject to change, depending on how long Bieniemy is away from the team.

Kansas City’s rookies have already reported to training camp, while veterans will be in place tomorrow. Contact practices are not far away as a result, but it is unclear when Bieniemy will be back with the Chiefs.
