Ochocinco Offers, Reneges Supports For Kelce at World Series
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Ochocinco originally had no issue with game uno of the World Series, namely Travis Kelce's prescience. Kelce's fellow tight end Shannon Sharpe, however, changed his mind.

Sharpe, now with ESPN, recapped Week 8's Sunday slate of NFL action alongside former receiver Chad Johnson on their web series "Nightcap with Unc and Ocho." Sunday's most shocking development no doubt transpired in the Rockies, as the Denver Broncos ended a lengthy losing streak against the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. The lauded tight end Kelce led all receivers with 58 yards on six grabs but Denver prevailed 24-9 in front of a frozen yet frenzied home crowd at Empower Field at Mile High.

The tilt between Kansas City and Denver was a snoozer compared to the opening game of the World Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers on Friday night. Kelce was one of over 42,000 fans who took in Texas' thrilling 6-5 walk-off victory earned in extra innings less than 48 hours before he faced the Broncos.

Sharpe was "disappointed" in his fellow Super Bowl champion, but Johnson originally came to his defense.

“I know the Chiefs lost. I know (Kansas City quarterback Patrick) Mahomes didn’t have a game. I know Travis Kelce didn’t have a game,” Johnson said. “But you’re not going to tell me that you can’t enjoy yourself on a Friday night, which is a short day.

"Listen to me: it’s a short day.”

To Johnson's point, Fridays are light days during NFL prep weeks, with on-field activities mostly limited to walkthroughs.

But, in a twist rarely, if ever, seen on the endless plethora of sports debate shows, Sharpe got Johnson to change his mind by reminding him that Game 1 was held at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, placing Kelce in three cities in a 72-hour span (Kansas City, Arlington, Denver).

"Oh s*** ... OK," a sheepish Johnson declared.

Sharpe, used to his own share of high-profile games as a similarly accomplished tight end between the Broncos (1990-99, 2002-03) and Baltimore Ravens (2000-01), was willing to give Kelce a pass if he took in the Fall Classic during his bye week. Going to the game with the Chiefs just two sleeps from kickoff, however, was unforgivable, in his eyes.

“It’s an awful look. It’s a terrible look," an unapologetic Sharpe declared. "You’ve got a game on Sunday. You’re going to board a plane? Every coach I’ve ever played for has always told us one thing on Friday: Make sure you get off your feet.”

Monday's Game 3 of the World Series (8:03 p.m. ET, Fox), tied at one game apiece after the Diamondbacks struck back in the second matchup on Saturday in Arlington, will move the series to Chase Field in Arizona for the next three nights. There's more than likely no layover in Phoenix in store for Kelce, who returns to action with the Chiefs in Germany against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday (9:30 a.m. ET, NFL Network).
