Oddsmakers Reveal Shocker for Cowboys Next Game

FRISCO - It's not just Jerry Jones. There are those - even old friend Jimmy Johnson - who believe the Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of making a shocking playoff push.

Already with a two-game winning streak that has pushed their record to 5-7, the glass-half-full theory goes like this: Sandwich winnable home games against the Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers around a layup victory over the lowly Carolina Panthers and suddenly they are 8-7 at Christmas and legitimately in the mix for the NFC's final Wild Card berth.

The reality, of course, is that the Cowboys have only win at AT&T Stadium, where they have been regularly blown out this season. Monday night's opponent, the Bengals, have one of the NFL's best offenses and the Bucs are now a winning team after beating the Las Vegas Raiders Sunday to improve to 7-6.

And about the supposedly "lowly" Panthers ... Don't look now, but next weekend's game in Charlotte will be anything but a layup for the Cowboys.

After a 1-7 start, the Panthers are 2-3 in their last five games. Their last three defeats have each been by one score: three points to the Kansas City Chiefs on a last-second field goal, in overtime to the Bucs, and Sunday's six-point loss at the Philadelphia Eagles in which wide-open receiver Xavier Legette dropped a pass at Philly's 2-yard line in the final minute.

The Cowboys may be prematurely chalking up a visit to Carolina as a victory, but some realize it will be a tougher game than expected. Included in that group are the folks who establish odds for a living.

Despite their 3-10 record, the Panthers opened Monday as 1.5-point favorites over the Cowboys.

It's the first time Carolina has been favored since Week 15 of the 2022 season. They haven't covered the spread as a betting favored since Week 3 in 2021.
