The Kansas City Chiefs want to get back to having an explosive offense once again in the 2025 season. When the Chiefs offense is at their best, we see the ball flying all over the field, especially connecting on deep passes that sometimes go to the house.
But last season, for the most part, we did not see any of that because of the lack of protection the offensive line gave to quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
If they have any chance or thought of getting back to the big game or even winning it next season they will need to do a good job in protecting their star quarterback.
One way the Chiefs can address the problem on the offensive line is by drafting some linemen in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Chiefs have already signed some linemen, but they need to fill in the rest of the pieces they need.
One offensive lineman who will be a great fit with the Chiefs is Wyatt Milum out of West Virginia. He would be a great fit because the offense the Chiefs like to run fits Milum's game well, and it is what he does best.
PFF graded Milum as the best offensive lineman in Pass Blocking without play action. PFF gave him a 93.5 grade and it is the best out of all the linemen coming out of this year's draft.
The Mountaineers ran play action on just 30% of passes this past season — below the average rate in the Power Four — due in part to the reliability of their protection to stand up without it. Milum led the nation in PFF pass-blocking grade without run action, having allowed just four pressures and zero sacks across 241 pass sets.
The Chiefs like to drop back and let Mahomes throw the ball, especially out of the shotgun formation. The Chiefs can select Milum and give their quarterback a reliable player who will protect him when he drops back and wants to take a chance down the field.
When the Chiefs' offensive line blocks for Mahomes, their offense is unstoppable. With that, they can be back in the big game and win it this time. It is going to be interesting to see what the Chiefs do in this year's draft.
