Although it's been well over a year since O.J. Simpson passed away, he's back in the headlines this week.

Simpson, a former USC star and NFL running back, died after a battle with prostate cancer. He was outstanding for the Buffalo Bills, rushing for 11,236 yards and 61 touchdowns. His success on the gridiron was ultimately overshadowed by him being on trial for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in the 1990s.

Even though Simpson was acquitted in that trial, a $33.5 million civil court judgment was awarded to the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in 1997. It was mostly unpaid during Simpson's lifetime, which led to it building up interest.

What's the latest on O.J. Simpson?

The Simpson estate's executor, Malcolm LaVergne, has agreed to pay Goldman but isn't willing to meet the $117 million asking price since it did "not appear to be as accurate as possible based on simple judgment interest calculations."

Initially, it was reported that Simpson's net worth was approximately $3 million at the time of his death. However, his estate was valued somewhere between $500,000 and $1 million.

"LaVergne told NBC News that the value of Simpson’s estate is $500,000 to $1 million," a report from NBC News said. "He said the estate will pay Goldman what it can after administrative expenses and the IRS is paid. Simpson owed the IRS money when he died."

Goldman's attorney, Michaelle Rafferty, considers LaVergne's acceptance of the creditor claim as a step in the right direction. We'll see how this situation plays out.
