Official Valuation For New York Giants Revealed After Wednesday's Sale

Nothing reveals the market valuation of an NFL team quite like a stake sale and after the New York Giants sold a piece of their team this week, we now know how much it's worth.

On Wednesday, the New York Giants announced the sale of a ~10% equity stake in the team to Julia Koch. While the exact sale figure has not been disclosed, CNBC reported that the transaction gives the Giants a team valuation of $10.3 billion. With a little rough math, that means Koch paid roughly $990 million to upwards of $1 billion depending on whether she bought a little more or less than exactly 10% of the team.

More importantly, the sale sets a new official mark for the highest valuation placed on an NFL team sale of any equity size.

"The National Football League on Wednesday approved the purchase of a 10% stake in the New York Giants by Julia Koch in a transaction that values the team at $10.3 billion, according to two people who are close to the deal but not authorized to speak publicly. The deal marks the highest valuation placed on an NFL team for a team sale," CNBC reported.

Giants ownership situation

The Mara family have owned the New York Giants since the franchise was first founded all the way back in 1925. But in 1991, members of the family sold a 50% stake in the team to Preston Robert Tisch, who in turn passed his stake in the team down through his family.

It's unclear whether the Mara or Tisch families separately sold their shares so Koch could get hers or whether it was a joint effort, but it's doubtful that Koch will gain operational control of the team in any capacity.

The team stated as much in their official statement on the partnership with Koch:

"The partnership was approved by the NFL at the League Meeting on October 22. This new partnership does not affect the current leadership structure of the Giants, with John Mara continuing in his role as President and CEO and Steve Tisch as Executive Vice President and Chairman of the Board."

John Mara and Steve Tisch, the controlling owners and operators of the team, both welcomed Koch into the fold. Koch said that she and her partners look forward to working with them.

"On behalf of the entire Mara family, I would like to welcome Julia and her family to the New York Giants," said John Mara. "It was clear during our discussions that Julia and her family understood the importance of this franchise to the Mara and Tisch families and the relationship we have with our fans and community. Our discussions were productive, and we are pleased to have them as a part of the New York Giants."

"The Tisch family is proud to have Julia and her family join the Tisches and Maras as we enter this new century of New York Giants football," said Steve Tisch. "With an ever-evolving sports landscape, we have a partnership that will strengthen our organization."

"My family and I are honored to join the Giants organization, a storied franchise with deep roots in New York," said Julia Koch. "We look forward to supporting the Mara and Tisch families to advance the team's continued success and appreciate the partnership with two great families."

Though with the way the Giants have been run through the years, there's probably no shortage of Giants fans who would rather see Koch running the team regardless of her experience in pro sports.
