Caleb Downs and the defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes have been flawless through their first seven games, as they sit atop the AP Poll and hold a 7-0 record. Much of the team's success can be attributed to Downs and the defense, as they are allowing just 5.86 points per game this year with new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia at the helm.

As the unanimous All-American safety and the Buckeyes prepare for their Week 10 matchup against the Penn State Nittany Lions (3-4), the honors are already beginning to pour in for Downs. On the season, he has recorded 34 total tackles and an interception while looking to be well on his way to being named an All-American for the third year in a row.

With Ohio State having the highest chance of winning the national title in college football (24.4%) according to ESPN's FPI, Downs has a chance to truly go down as one of the most decorated players in program history.

Although Ohio State won the title a year ago, Downs came up short of two individual award races. He ended up losing the Thorpe Award (best defensive back) to former Texas corner Jahdae Barron and also ended up losing the Bednarik Award (best defensive player) to former Colorado star Travis Hunter. Following Ohio State's announcement on Tuesday, he may have a chance to avenge his loss to Barron.

As announced by Ohio State on X, the junior safety and former Alabama transfer has been named a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award. Not only did the program share the news, it also made it quite clear how good of a player the Buckeyes think Downs is.

"The Best Defensive Player in the country is a @caleb_downs2 x @jimthorpeaward," wrote Ohio State on X.

The finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 25, with the winner of the award being revealed on Dec. 12 during ESPN's "Home Depot College Football Awards" show.

As for Downs' immediate future, he and the Buckeyes will host Penn State on Saturday at noon ET in a game that will air on Fox.
